Plus,how come the manholes are so clean.You took the pics in a museum or something?If they were on the roads the colours cant possibly be so bright.

It is Japan~ If you have been there you would understand, Japanese people respect public area as if it's their own homes, it's a total joy to walk on their streets, everything always so clean n neat~ ;)

I lived in Japan for 3 years and never discovered the manholes. Where was I? I must have been looking up? There is so much to see there. Now I just feel like I've missed another really cool part of their culture! I'm sad. Your site is great!

awesome site, some of this stuff is really interesting. This page in particular caught my eye, as I have just come back (to NZ) from Japan, and was fascinated by the manhole designs - see my blog for other examples. If u like, I can email the pics of them to u so u can include them. I have pics of Kobe, Yokkaichi, Himeji, etc stuff from Honshu
The Japanese have manholes down to color. Does anyone know what they are using for the color?

In some cases the color is a type of rubber which sometimes peels off over time.

Wicked pics, I remember seeing some similar to those. I did recognize the Yokosuka Fire hydrant access one. I also noticed the one that was upside down(http://photos1.blogger.com/x/blogger/7016/3128/1600/267334/manholes03.jpg). I could still read it. Kind of makes me want to go back to Japan again for another 7 years.
I've seen a lot of manholes in my life. You can read about my funny experiences with them at Slow Day at Work, but I've never seen cool ones like these!
Art is drawing attention to what-seemed- as-the-obvious - to make it special. Your post has transformed another part of life into art. Thank you.
It follows the great Netsuke whereby a part of a tie-string was transformed into objects of wonder. Really it is the same with Western Art - but the west has forgotten - a painting was a way of making a wall interesting. It is the celebration of the obvious.
Unfortunately most of modern art has lost it.

Fabulous pics! I started noticing how unique and artistic some manhole covers are and have photographed them in Greece and Norway. Portland, OR, uses roses on them.
