Living Photographs by Mole and Thomas
Taken at the beginning of the 20th century, by English photographer Arthur S. Mole and his American colleague John D. Thomas, these living photographs show thousands of American soldiers posing as symbols of American history.
They traveled from one military camp to another taking photos of soldiers forming patriotic symbols as a part of planned promotional campaign to sell war bonds. Thousands soldiers would form gigantic patriotic symbols such as Statue of Liberty, president Woodrow Wilson, American Eagle or Liberty Bell which were photographed from above.
Mole and Thomas spent days preparing formations which were photographed from a 70 to 80 foot tower with an 11 by 14 inch camera. Photos by Mole and Thomas are now part of the Chicago Historical Society, the Museum of Modern Art and the Library of Congress.
In the picture of the Statue of Liberty there are 18,000 men: 12,000 of them in the torch alone, but just 17 at the base. The men at the top of the picture are actually half a mile away from the men at the bottom.

Swallow Flies Through Two-Inch Gap at 35 MPH
A swallow with a 14-inch wingspan managed to turn sideways mid flight to squeeze through a two-inch-wide gap in a locked barn door. It did this without touching sides.
The swallow is one of a pair rearing chicks inside the barn in Angus Glens, North Dundee.
Wildlife photographer Keith Ringland captured the moment from a nearby shed. He believes the parents have worked out an entry- and exit system to avoid colliding at high speeds: "The swallow used a different, much bigger hole in the roof to leave the building," he told the Daily Mail.

Sand Crop Circles by Andres Amador
Andres Amador works with one of the biggest canvases available, with entire lengths of beaches swallowed up by his art. Sadly the sea is no discerning art critic, for once the San Francisco artist finishes his staggering artwork, the waves come in to wipe the slate clean.
Many of his stunning images, which start out as simple squiggles in the 39-year-old's notebook, span an incredible 500x300feet and are raked into the grains in a race against the tide.
Using a canvas crafted by the elements the patient American waits for a full or new moon to make sure low tides offer him plenty of space to muster the incredible patterns.

The Girls of Comic-Con 2009
The San Diego Comic Con, also known as SDCC to many fans around the world, is the biggest event in the geek diary by far. The mix of celebrity panels, exclusive movie footage, workshops, movie collectibles memorabilia and the overall atmosphere have become the stuff of modern pop culture legend. It is paradise for film and comic geeks, and many of the attendees that visit SDCC each year have flown there from all over the globe.
Year in, year out, the biggest films and TV shows in the industry are unveiled with exclusive footage and news from the directors, cast and crew themselves. This year is no different. Pet Airways - Airlines for Pets
A new airline for pets is taking off with weekly flights to five airports across the country. Beginning July 14, Pet Airways is flying pets to and from Baltimore/Washington International; Midway in Chicago; Rocky Mountain Airport in Broomfield, Colo., near Denver; Hawthorne Municipal Airport near Los Angeles; and Republic Airport on Long Island serving the New York City metro area.
The airline allows cats and dogs to travel in carriers in the main cabin of the plane, rather than the cargo hold. While some airlines allow small animals to fly in the cabin as long as their carriers fit under the seats, Pet Airways has no limit on size.
The carrier will not transport human passengers other than crew and attendants to care for the animals during flights. Pet owners will have to fly separately.
One-way fares start at $149. Many of the flights on the airline's limited initial itinerary are already booked full with a waiting list depending on the animal's size.
To prevent pets from getting sick, there won't be any beverage or snack service.

Having Fun On Flooded Streets
Floods are never pretty, they cause a lot of damage and sometimes even death. But, if you can, it’s good to see a positive side in everything.
Take these two guys from Belarus, for example. After the streets of Minsk were flooded, on July 24, they found a way to turn things from tragic to fun. Using a jet-ski they had a world of fun instead of worrying about the flood.

Total Privacy at Clingstone Mansion in Rhode Island
This 103-years-old mansion in Rhode Island is built on a small, rocky island far away from any nosy neighbors. Just like this house, built close to Oslofjord Island, Norway, it offers total privacy.
Clingstone mansion was built in 1905, for a cost of roughly $36,000, by J.S. Lovering Wharton, a distant cousin of 79-year-old Henry Wood, the present owner of the house. He and his ex-wife bought it in 1961, for $3,600 and managed to bring it back to life after it had been abandoned for two decades.
Mr. Wood and his family found an ingenious way of preserving this 23-room architectural wonder: the Clingstone work weekend. Every year, around Memorial Day, the Wood family and up to 70 friends gather at Clingstone to clean the mansion and fix any of its problems. Practically, any volunteer workers are welcome.
In winter time the boats and floating dock are stored at the nearby Jamestown Boatyard, in exchange for a week’s stay at Clingstone, during the summer.

The Shweeb - A Human-Powered Monorail
The Schweeb is an experimental transit system in New Zealand that combines the bicycle and a monorail track. Users lie down individual pods and work the pedals to move forward:
Our proposal to get you safely and quickly from one point in the city to another would be to elevate you onto a network of interconnected monorails where you never have to stop at traffic lights. The ideal vehicle for such a system already exists. Fully faired recumbent cycles, because of their low aerodynamic resistance, are breaking all bicycle speed records and currently reaching speeds of 90 kph (56 mph) in sprints. Suspending these comfortable and highly efficient machines from monorail tracks has the added advantage of taking away the rolling resistance of pneumatic tyres. Trains of Shweebs can further reduce the aero drag – ten people travelling at 40 kph will each have a lot less work to do than a single rider at the same speed. A single rider requires only a fraction of the energy to achieve the same speed as a normal cyclist – thanks to the significant reductions in both aero drag and tire friction. The vehicle is completely weatherproof, you can’t derail or fall out while on the cellphone or blackberry!

Invisible Man: Liu Bolin's Camouflage Art
35-year-old Liu Bolin, from Shandong, China, manages to camouflage himself in any surroundings, no matter how difficult they might be.
Liu works on a single photo for up to 10 hours at a time, to make sure he gets it just right, but he achieves the right effect: sometimes passers-by don’t even realize he is there until he moves.
The talented Liu Bolin says his art is a protest against the actions of the Government, who shut down his art studio in 2005 and persecutes artists. It’s about not fitting into modern society. Despite problems with Chinese authorities, Liu’s works are appreciated at an international level.

Chicken Head Tracking - Pennywhistle Productions
Chickens have a great ability to keep their heads stable. Our bodies use a gyro-like mechanism in our ears which has 3 mutually orthogonal inertial measurement devices. Modern motion processors use something called an Inertial Measurment Unit (IMU). These devices provide movement data which can be used to compensate for the movement. Chickens apparently have the same type mechanism only with a higher update rate.

13th Annual Summer Redneck Games
The Redneck Games are held in East Dublin, Georgia annually. The games were started by Mac Davis in response to a comment made by the media; that when the 1996 Olympic Games went to Atlanta, it would be held by a group of rednecks. Taking offense to this, Mac Davis and some locals set up the annual Redneck Games to reinforce the stereotype the media held. Some events that are held during the Redneck Games include: the cigarette flip, bobbing for pig’s trotters, toilet seat throwing, mud pit belly flop, wet T-shirt contest and others. For each of the events, a trophy is awarded; a half crushed, empty mounted beer can.
Perhaps the most eye-catching event of the games is the Mud-Pit Belly Flop, where fully-clothed contestants plunge belly-first into a natural pool of red clay mud. The bigger the belly, the better your chance, as the winning flopper tends to weigh in at over 250 pounds and key criteria for the judges are beauty of form and size of splash.

Located in Darmstadt, Germany, the Waldspirale apartment-building was designed by Austrian artist, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, and built during the 1990s.
There are other apartment buildings in Darmstadt, but the U-shaped Waldspirale is special. Its diagonal roof is covered with grass, shrubs and trees and the facade follows an irregular grid organization.
Waldspirale has over 1,000 windows, but no two are the same. The handles on the apartment doors and the windows are also unique.
Waldspirale was completed in 2000 and people actually live in it.

The Musical Genius - Derek Paravicini
Derek Paravicini (born July 26, 1979) is a blind English autistic savant and a musical prodigy. He lives in Surrey, England.
Though autism is thought to be the source of Derek’s extraordinary musical ability, his blindness may contribute. Because Derek is blind, the part of his brain that would normally be used for sight and light detection could be used for extra auditory ability. Derek is able to, with a great deal of precision and accuracy, detect and recognise not just one but multiple notes played at once (so far he can distinguish over 20 notes).
Learn more about him here, and five parts of a documentary about him follow.
